What is an Earthing Nut?

An earthing nut is a specialist brass fitting used with SWA (Steel Wire Armoured) cable glands to establish a reliable, low-impedance connection between a cable's steel armour and the installation's protective earthing system. It replaces the traditional banjo washer and separate earth tag with a single machined component that is faster to install, easier to inspect and more mechanically stable over the life of the installation.

In a modern SWA earthing nut design, the nut threads directly onto the outer portion of the SWA gland body. A dedicated conductor entry accepts the protective earth conductor, which is clamped in place by stainless grub screws to a specified torque. The result is a repeatable, torque-verified termination that maintains full 360° contact with the gland body — the ideal geometry for a low-impedance armoured cable earthing bond.

Brass earthing nuts are the industry preference because brass combines excellent conductivity with strong mechanical properties and long-term corrosion resistance. CZ121 brass in particular is dimensionally stable under repeated tightening cycles, resistant to galvanic corrosion when mated with brass glands, and holds a stable low-impedance contact for the full service life of the installation — the qualities that separate a premium cable gland earthing nut from a generic stamped part.

An earthing nut is required because BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations, demands that the metallic armour of an SWA circuit is effectively bonded to the protective earthing system with a connection that is mechanically reliable and electrically continuous. Without a solid earth bond, a fault could energise the cable armour, gland body and any connected metallic enclosure — with obvious consequences for safety. A properly torqued brass earthing nut provides the deliberate, low-resistance path that lets protective devices operate quickly and reliably.

Typical applications for an earthing nut span the full range of professional electrical installations: industrial manufacturing plants, commercial fit-outs, data centres, control panels, distribution boards, rail infrastructure, renewable energy installations and OEM panel builds. Anywhere SWA cable terminates into a metallic enclosure, SWA accessories such as the earthing nut are the interface that transfers fault current from the armour, through the gland and into the earth conductor with minimum impedance.

Beyond safety, a well-executed earth bond is also critical for EMC performance. High-frequency interference on the SWA armour must be diverted to earth rather than radiated into surrounding equipment, and only a consistent 360° bond — the kind produced by a precision machined earthing nut — will maintain that path over time. The VOLTLOK® cable gland accessories family is engineered around this principle, delivering protective earthing and EMC bonding in a single, integrated component.

Compared with legacy hardware, a premium earthing nut removes the ambiguity of a hand-fabricated banjo bond. There is no washer to lose, no earth tag to misalign, and no risk of a loose thread or missed torque. For the professional electrician, that means faster installation, cleaner terminations and a more reliable electrical earthing system — every job, every gland, every time.

11 — Answers

Frequently asked questions

Everything professional electricians ask about earthing nuts, SWA cable gland accessories and the VOLTLOK® system.

01

What is an earthing nut?

An earthing nut is a specialist brass fitting used with SWA (Steel Wire Armoured) cable glands to provide a reliable, low-impedance connection between the cable's steel armour and the electrical earth. It threads onto the exposed portion of the cable gland and secures an earth conductor directly, replacing the traditional banjo washer and separate earth tag with a single, mechanically stable component.
02

Why use an earthing nut?

An earthing nut ensures the metallic armour of an SWA cable is bonded correctly to the installation's earthing system, providing a safe path for fault currents. Without a reliable earth bond a fault could leave enclosures and cable armour live. A torque-controlled brass earthing nut delivers a repeatable, inspectable termination that remains reliable over the full service life of the installation.
03

What does BS 7671 require?

BS 7671 (the IET Wiring Regulations) requires the metallic armour of an SWA circuit to be effectively connected to the protective earthing system, with connections that are mechanically reliable and electrically continuous. The VOLTLOK® earthing nut is designed to help installations meet these requirements with a repeatable, inspectable termination.
04

Can an earthing nut replace a banjo washer?

Yes. VOLTLOK® replaces the traditional banjo washer and separate earth tag with a single integrated component that threads directly onto the SWA gland. The result is a cleaner, faster and more mechanically stable termination while maintaining full earth continuity.
05

How do I earth an SWA cable?

Prepare the SWA cable to standard gland dimensions, fit the SWA cable gland, thread the VOLTLOK® earthing nut onto the gland, insert the earth conductor into the aperture and tighten the grub screws to the specified torque. The result is a 360° low-impedance bond between the armour and the protective earthing system.
06

What is EMC bonding?

EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) bonding is the practice of maintaining a low-impedance path to earth for high-frequency interference on cable screens and armour. A 360° bond between the SWA armour and the earthing system diverts HF noise to earth rather than allowing it to radiate. VOLTLOK® maintains full circumferential contact with the gland body to support strong EMC bonding.
07

What conductor sizes are supported?

VOLTLOK® is designed to accept the range of protective earth conductor sizes typically used with 20mm — 75mm SWA glands. Refer to the technical data sheet for exact conductor and torque figures for each size.
08

Can I retrofit an earthing nut?

Yes. VOLTLOK® can be retrofitted to existing SWA installations without disturbing the cable, conductors or gland body. Remove the original banjo bond and earth tag, thread VOLTLOK® onto the gland and re-terminate the earth conductor.
09

Can it be reused?

Yes. The machined brass body and stainless grub screws are engineered for repeated tightening cycles, allowing VOLTLOK® to be removed and refitted during inspection, testing or reconfiguration without loss of performance.
10

Can it be used outdoors?

Yes. VOLTLOK® is manufactured from solid brass and is suitable for external use when combined with a compatible IP-rated SWA gland and appropriate weatherproofing. For coastal or aggressive industrial environments, additional protection with a suitable shroud is recommended.
11

Can it be used with stainless steel cable glands?

VOLTLOK® is optimised for use with standard brass SWA cable glands. It can be used alongside stainless steel glands in appropriate applications, subject to project-specific corrosion assessments. Contact the technical team for advice on mixed-metal installations.
12

How long does installation take?

A trained electrician can typically fit a VOLTLOK® earthing nut in under a minute per gland. There is no drilling, no banjo bond to fabricate and no separate earth tag to align — resulting in substantial time savings on multi-gland installations.
13

Does it improve earth continuity?

Yes. The 360° contact between VOLTLOK® and the gland body, combined with torque-controlled clamping of the earth conductor, delivers a consistent low-impedance path that improves earth continuity compared with traditional banjo bonds.
14

Does it reduce installation time?

Significantly. By eliminating the banjo washer, earth tag and separate fastenings, VOLTLOK® reduces the number of components and the number of steps required per termination, cutting installation time to under sixty seconds per gland.
15

Why choose brass?

Brass — specifically CZ121 — combines excellent electrical conductivity with strong mechanical properties and long-term corrosion resistance. Machined brass earthing accessories maintain stable, low-impedance contact over time and resist galvanic corrosion when mated with brass glands.
16

How is it inspected?

VOLTLOK® provides a clean, visible termination that can be inspected quickly on site. Grub-screw torque, conductor engagement and mechanical fit are all visually verifiable, supporting periodic inspection and testing regimes.
17

Does it require maintenance?

Under normal indoor and outdoor conditions VOLTLOK® is maintenance-free for the design life of the installation. Periodic inspection as part of routine electrical testing is recommended, in line with BS 7671 guidance.
